About Bridgetown and the Garrison: the back story

Bridgetown grew up around the Careenage, its inner harbour, and became one of the earliest fortified port towns of the British Atlantic. UNESCO inscribed the old town and the Garrison together in 2011 for their 17th-century street plan and colonial buildings. Today it is the island’s capital and commercial centre, with Broad Street’s shops, Parliament and National Heroes Square, the Synagogue district, the cruise port and the beaches of Carlisle Bay on its doorstep.
